Technical Passing Development

Passing Program

I will provide resources here to develop player's passing techniques.  This is one of the weakest areas in the US and requires focus by the coach.  In particular I believe the lack of the passing skills limits the width that teams in the US can play.  Note that this is technical passing development - skill development requires context.  See Attacking Skills for more taking passing techniques into skills.

I have put together a technical passing program for USA Rugby.  I do not believe that players will become good passes through team practice.  They need to work on their techniques outside of team practices, and then the coach can work on the skills.  This program offers a technical development program for the players to follow.

This is an interesting article about developing unstructured attacking play.  I am not sure I believe in the approach explitictly used (it is very technical), it has some great information on passing, footwork and lines of run.  Developing unstructured attacking play.

Catching is the number 1 issue for passing in the US.  We do not catch well, and therefore we are not good passers.  Here are some ways to develop hand-eye coordination.

This is an interesting approach to developing an attacking philosophy.  If you want to try some different drills/games you should take a look.  Attacking philosophy,

I was a scrum-half so I have my own thoughts on the how to develop that pass, but I do know that a team with a scrum-half that cannot pass well cannot play a wide game and is easy to defend.  Here are some articles on the scrum-half pass.  Biomechanics 1 Biomechanics 2
