Game DevelopmentDeveloping youth, high school and college rugby I am a big fan of strategic planning in rugby. I believe that
you can develop a strategic plan for both developing your program, and
for developing your on field play. I will offer more on on field
play a little later. Here is something that I put together for USA
Rugby to help coaches get players on board with the objectives to the
season. I have seen a a disconnect between the coaches and players
objectives destroy programs, and I do something like this with every
team I coach; college, all-star and national team. Nigel Melville discuss the challenges of recruitment in the US.
In my experience, recruitment is not as big an issue as retention.
Many players come out to try rugby, but many of them do not stay.
I believe that we lose these players (especially at the college and club
level) because we throw them in with the experienced players and they
naturally struggle. I have found success changing two aspects.
The first is to have a "rookie day." This is where players with no
experience can learn some of the basics of the game with other new
player (therefore less pressure), and also develop a new player practice
protocol. Here is the practice protocol. |
